Quality education is top on our list
Welcome Back!

Although the summer may seem like it’s just begun, we’re nearing the end of our summer vacation.  The first day of school is Tuesday, September 2 and it is approaching quickly.  Hopefully you and your family have had a fun and safe summer but are ready to get back into the school routine.  We at Bay County Public School Academy are excited for the 2008-2009 school year!

School Day

The school day begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and classroom instruction begins immediately, so it is important the students arrive on time.  Unless participating in the OASIS program or breakfast, students should arrive at the school no sooner than 7:45 a.m.  The school day ends at 3:30 p.m. and unless students are participating in the after school program, they should be picked up no later than 3:45 p.m.

Meet and Greet

We will be having our Meet and Greet (Open House) from 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27th.  We will distribute school forms, school supply lists, and the Student Handbook detailing the dress code, general rules, and Code of Conduct.  Students will be able to meet their classroom teacher and view their new classroom.

Hot Lunch

The regular cost of hot lunch will be $2.15.  Milk will be available for $.35 per carton.  You may send a check or cash to Bay County PSA for any amount to be added to your child’s lunch account.  Students whose lunch charges reach $18.00 will be denied lunch and only written permission from the CAO each day will allow a student to charge a lunch and go over the $18.00 amount.

Dress Code

To help you with your school shopping, we are a dress code school that accepts solid white, light blue, navy and burgundy shirts with navy or khaki pants/skirts.  No sandals are allowed.  All shoes must have backs.  Bay County PSA will be opening a school store that will sell new uniform clothing at wholesale prices.  Stop by and visit during our Meet and Greet on August 27th.  Free used uniform clothing will be available.

Picture Day

As we prepare for this fall, we would like to inform you of the following picture dates that we have scheduled for our school.  Original Picture Day Date: September 22, 2008 and Make-up/Retake Day Date: October 28, 2008.

Mark your calendars and show your support for the 1st Annual Fall Carnival, Thursday, August 21st at Bay County Public School Academy from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  Purchase your tickets at the door: 5 for $1.00.  Games, inflatables, prizes, tour of our Paragon Hall of History and much, much more.  Enroll your child or have a friend enroll and be entered to win a prize! Special Edition

The intent of this newsletter is to let our parents know that Bay County Academy is accomplishing many positive things in our school with the help of our staff, our students, our parents and guardians.

Schools in the State of Michigan are compared to each other using the MEAP test. Our MEAP scores in our lower grades are very comparable to other schools in our area. Our school is on the right track to improve our scores in the near future and we feel our commitment to teaching rather than teaching to a test, is as important as our MEAP scores. Our MEAP scores will rise but our belief that students need to learn more than just the areas tested by the MEAP guides us also.

Bay Academy has an individual written learning plan for each student. This is shared with parents and students at parent-teacher conferences four times a year. This plan is used as a guide to address individual academic needs each student has and depending on need, a student will have intervention time in a small group with a highly qualified staff members to work on those individual needs. The school also has Title One aides that work directly in the classroom. The K to 3rd grade Reading First Program targets each student with a goal of reading on grade level by 3rd grade. A lot of work and planning is involved during these years. Our P-K to 2nd grade gives our students a great foundation for the MEAP and for the school years that follow. Our challenge ahead is to continue to sustain this through our upper grades while also expanding a student’s knowledge.

Our Paragon program is unique to Mosaica Schools. Paragon integrates social studies, history, and geography; involving many cultures and many different time periods throughout man’s existence. Paragon has activities for students of all academic levels and promotes working together in groups. Our paragon presentations in the evening combine art, music and physical education as an extension of the classroom. This makes us different than many other schools which makes the charter concept a great choice for your student. Other advantages our students have is a two hour literacy block for reading and writing and science instruction at each grade level.

Those of you who choose to send your students here understand our hard work in all our grades and embrace the experience your child has here. Parents, guardians, teachers and students all have to be involved to give each child the best learning experience possible. There are opportunities here to be involved with your child's education to any degree a parent wishes. Our school has Paragon Nights, Parent University, Look Ahead Meetings and other special programs for parents. Our students take many field trips for exposure to the culture that surrounds our school. Our students can participate in Martin Luther King Day Essay Contest, Lego League, and Michigan History Day to name a few. Our small setting allows any student to participate in our many activities. Bay Academy is a successful school and will continue to improve and excel. The Academy appreciates your continued support as your school of choice and will be here for many years to come.

Stop and Go

The Back Parking Lot is a busy place before and after school. Please remember that traffic near the school travels North to South, single lane. You may park in the lot to pick up your child. Also take extra caution during this icy time of year. DO NOT STOP in the flow of traffic. This causes heightened possibilities for accidents. Thank you for your concern and co-operation in this matter.

No Coats in Class

COATS are not to be worn in the classroom. If your student is concerned
because of the cool temperature, please supply them with sweaters and
sweatshirts without logos, preferably aligned to our uniform policy.

OASIS

The OASIS program sets aside time for playing to learn, homework help, craft and creating time. We also encourage social interaction on the playground, and during our Friday Movie nights. After school OASIS is open from 3:15 PM until 6:00 PM. Please stop in and visit Miss Mary for fees and schedules.
Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Miss Mary and the OASIS Team are here to serve.
