Just the Math Facts
Bay County Academy uses
the Chicago Math, Everyday Math series for math
instruction in grades K-5. This program was designed and researched
by the University of Chicago as a new way to teach math. It
was
developed
with the belief that children rarely learn a concept the
first time they experience it. Therefore, skills and concepts
are
introduced on a basic level starting in kindergarten and
taught progressively until the child masters the topic. The
students
and teachers love it!
Unlike the way many adults today learned
math, Everyday Math gives students the opportunity to
understand how and why the problems work. Mathematics means
more when
it is rooted in real-life problems. Starting in Kindergarten,
students
use manipulatives to figure out solutions to problems.
The students use base-ten blocks, tangrams, attribute blocks,
calculators, dice, money, clocks, fraction squares, balances,
rulers, and
a variety of other materials.
Everyday Math challenges
students by introducing concepts that are not usually taught
at their
respective grade levels. A visitor to the school may see
kindergarteners beginning to divide objects and a first grader
using fractions.
Algebra concepts are introduced in early elementary so
when
children return to these concepts later in school they
already have a base. Students are also given regular arithmetic
practice in their workbooks, their skills books, and by playing
math
games that encourage mental skills.
In the middle
school, the students use Impact Math, which is similar
to the Everyday
Math program because it teaches students how to solve
a problem. The answers are not just given, the students needs
to find
the answer and the way to arrive at the answer. Impact
Math is a
three year algebra course, which, upon completion, the
students
will be prepared to enter high school geometry. Even
at this higher level the students use manipulatives to solve
real-life problems. When they encounter a situation in their
future
these math programs will have prepared students to attack
and
solve
the problem.
