Works of Art

The Art program at Bay County Academy is varied and multilevel. On the classroom level, Paragon offers teachers and students a multitude of hands-on activities to complete. Students create instruments from the culture they are studying. They make cave paintings and paint in the style of Michelangelo (upside down!). They construct pottery vessels to hold their grains from harvest. They create Roman costumes, Egyptian costumes, animal costumes, and Indian costumes. All these activities and more are at the center of Paragon.

In addition to the wonderful projects the students complete with their classroom teacher, the school has an art teacher who is contracted by the Parent Teacher Organization. This very talented teacher comes to the school for ten weeks and teaches art to the students in second through seventh grades. She does a number of projects with them, including sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing, drafting, and pottery. The students get the chance to experience a number of different medias and techniques that they can later apply to other school projects.

Students have the opportunity to share and present their art projects from school or home each year in our school sponsored Art Fair. The Parent Teacher Organization, coordinates an art fair for all the students. Each child can enter a piece related to a theme. Volunteers from the community judge each piece on originality, creativity, neatness, effort and overall artistic quality. This is a highlight for the students each year.

The Art Goes to School program focuses on fourth grade but also exposes some of the second through fifth graders to art history as it relates to eras they are studying in Paragon. Sponsored by the PTO, a parent volunteer presents the material set up through the Saginaw Art Museum. It consists of an educational slideshow and some hands on art activities.

This year, the PTO has also sponsored a parent volunteer/photographer to work with fifth through seventh grade students interested in learning about photography in an after school program.
