Communication
If you have any questions regarding your child
or any school issues, please follow the following communication
steps:
- Step One: Contact classroom teacher.
- Step Two: Contact the
school principal.
Teachers can accept
phone calls before school, after school and during their
planning time. Parents may also contact teachers
via email and
voice mail.
TOP Drop Off and Pick Procedures
Stop and Go parents are to use
the front curb area on State Street. Cars are not to park
in this area and never
leave your car unattended. Please utilize
the total curb area by driving to the end when you approach. Parents
are to remain with their cars during the pick-up time
of 3:35 p.m.
For safety reasons,
always have students exit to the curbside.
Park and Walk parents, who wish to accompany
their children into school, are to park in the east
entrance lot in the designated
spaces. Adults must accompany all students during drop and pick-up
times in the east lot. All kindergarten students will be dismissed
using the behind
school parking lot. Please enter the Academy off State Street and
exit only
using Smith Street from 7:45 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and
from 3:15 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. During school hours please use only
the Smith Street entrance for the safety of our children going
to and from the playground.
TOP Early Dismissal Method
If the need arises for an early dismissal,
parents will be contacted through a fan out system devised
for each room.
Parents are to report to the school
office for ID verification, then we will call the students to the office
for dismissal.
TOP Attendance Policy/Tardiness
Student attendance is very important
to academic success. It is both the parent and student's responsibility
to attend school.
Absences of ten or more and
tardiness of ten or more in one semester year will be referred to the
CAO for further action. Please call the office at 684-6484
if your child is
absent. Please leave the name, grade, teacher, and reason for absence
on the school’s voice mail if calling during non-school
hours. Any students missing more than three consecutive
school days require a note from a physician
documenting the absences.
TOP School Vacation Policy
Bay County Academy encourages families
to support student attendance and the importance of educational
achievement
by limiting appointments and vacations
to times outside of the regularly scheduled school day and calendar. Vacation
plans extended beyond three consecutive days during the school year require
a formal application process in advance. Vacation applications are submitted
to the CAO for approval no later two weeks before the scheduled absence.
Applications are available from the school office. It
is the parent and student responsibility
to obtain missed assignments. On the first day back from vacation, all
required work and missed assignments are due.
TOP Admission Policies
Bay County Public School Academy is a public
charter school. All charter schools shall comply fully with
the state Charter
School Law regarding admission
policies and procedures, as well as all other applicable state and
federal provisions. The charter school will be nonsectarian
in all respects.
The school shall not discriminate against any student,
employee, or other person
on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation,
or disability. Admission criteria will not consider intellectual or
athletic ability, aptitude, disability, race, creed, national
origin, religion
or ancestry. Open Enrollment for the Academy will take
place in the month
of March.
TOP Distribution of Literature by Students
The CAO or his/her designee
shall coordinate distribution or display of literature by
students enrolled in the school.
The material must be approved by the
CAO, must not be in violation of applicable Board of Directors regulations,
and must bear the name of the sponsoring individual(s) or school organization(s).
TOP Search
and Seizure
Desks, lockers, and storage spaces provided to
students without charge are the property of the school. The
CAO or designee
may conduct general
inspections
on a periodic basis and may open desks, lockers, or storage spaces in the
presence of a witness and examine the contents, including
personal belongings of students,
if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they contain illegal drugs,
contraband, weapons, or stolen property, or the student has violated or
is violating state or federal law, township codes or Board of
Directors’ policies
and regulations provided the search is conducted primarily for enforcing
order and discipline in the school and not for criminal prosecution. Reasonable
efforts
to locate the student shall be made prior to the search.
If the student
is present, the school official shall advise him/her of the
circumstances justifying the search and seizure of the objects
that the official believes the search may disclose. If the
student is not present,
he/she shall
be informed of the search. Stolen items and items that are specifically
prohibited by law, Board of Directors’ regulations, township, or
school regulations may be impounded. The student shall be given a receipt
for any items impounded
by school authorities, and parents shall be notified of items impounded.
TOP Electronic
Devices
Electronic devices such as beepers, pagers, and cell phones
are not allowed in school. Requests to waive this restriction
must be approved
by the CAO.

TOP Promotions
and Selling
Students and parents are not to participate
in any fund raising activity without the expressed approval
by the
Board of Directors and CAO. Students are prohibited
from selling candy, toys, or related items while at school.
TOP Toys and Games
Unless given permission by a staff member, students
are asked to refrain from bringing toys and games to school.
Inappropriate
items brought to school will
be confiscated and returned only to the parent or guardian.
TOP School Records
Parents have the right to inspect any and all
records relating to their dependent, and all inspections shall
be conducted
in the presence of a school representative.
Information may be released to others only with written consent. Nominal
fees may be charged for duplication of records. Parents
have the right to challenge
the contents of student records.
TOP Field Trips
Off site learning experiences are worthwhile experiences
that complement classroom learning. Unless excused by the
CAO, all students are expected
to participate
in off site experiences. A parent permission form will be supplied to the
parent before each experience. Parents assisting with
transportation are asked to
complete a Driver’s Authorization Form available in the school office.
TOP Student
Dismissal
In order to maximize learning time, parents are asked to wait
in the office lobby area before the dismissal time of 3:35
p.m.
TOP Student Council
Bay County Public School Academy’s Student
Council will consist of 6th through 8th grades. To qualify,
students submit an essay entitled, “Why
I want to be on the student council.” The essay is judged anonymously
and each grade will have at least one representative. There is no limit
to the number of representatives on the council.
TOP Snacks
If you have a question about sending a snack to school,
please contact your child’s teacher. It is the
responsibility of the parent to send nutritious snacks
to school.
TOP Medications Policy
Both the physician and parent will provide
parents with a medication form that needs to be completed.
Medication forms are available in the school office.
No medication will be administered without a medication form. All medications
are stored in locked containers or in a refrigerator inaccessible to children.
Parents cannot send medicines, including vitamins, cough drops or other
medicines in their child’s backpack. Medicines are to
be handed directly to the appropriate staff member. All medication
will be administered under the direction
of Bay County Academy staff. Over the counter medicines must be registered
and dispensed through the school office.
TOP Emergency Response Plan
The Bay County Academy has an emergency
plan in place to address the various events that may occur
in the building. The plan
is available for inspection
by parents in the main office.
TOP Visitors and Volunteers
For safety and security reasons, all
visitors are asked to report to the school office to obtain
a visitors pass.
TOP Fire and Tornado Drills
State laws mandate six fire drill
and two tornado drills each year.
TOP Change of Address and /or
Student Information
Please notify the school office regarding
any changes in phone, address or custody. This information
needs to be current in
case of an emergency.
TOP Directory Information
Our students often participate in many
extra-curricular activities such as awards assemblies, field
trips and athletic events.
Parents and the local newspaper
often document these events by filming, interviewing, and writing or by
taking photographs. When your child participates in such activities,
he/she may
be asked general directory information regarding name,
address, awards, honors,
and extra curricular activities. Under the Family Educational Rights and
Privacy Act, parents must be notified each year of their
rights regarding the release
of Directory Information.
TOP Withdrawal From School
Please contact the CAO when withdrawing
your child from school. All textbooks and materials that are
the property of Bay
County Public School Academy need
to be returned and the necessary paperwork needs to be completed.
TOP Playground
Behavior Rules
- Rough play such as pushing, shoving, tackle football
and king of the mountain is prohibited.
- Baseballs, skateboards,
roller blades, and golf balls are to remain at home.
- Please
clean footwear prior to entering the school building.
- Students
are to follow proper and safe behavior regarding the use
of playground equipment.
- Inappropriate language and behavior
may result in student losing recess privileges.
TOP Knives in Schools
The possession of any small knives (jackknife
type or otherwise) in school is strictly prohibited and will
result in a minimum
one-day or more suspension
from school. Parents, please remind your child of this rule.
TOP Lunchroom Procedures
and Behavior
Free and reduced lunches are available to all
families who are eligible. The lunch hour is one-half hour
long and lunchroom
supervisors supervise students.
Because of inclement weather, students may have to eat in their room periodically.
Students will have access to outside and inside play areas. Inappropriate
lunchroom behavior may result in student forfeiting group
lunch privileges.

- Students are to remain seated at their tables and
use good table manners
- Food is to be eaten only in the designated
area
- Students are to remain in designated area until dismissed
by supervisor.
- Students are responsible for the proper disposal
of container and food leftovers.
- Students are expected to
talk in a conversation voice
